Rowan University

Rowan University recently began installing a WebCTRL® open energy management and control system as part of its 5 year, $270 million construction program. DVL Automation of Bristol, Pennsylvania will install this system on new construction and renovation projects throughout the University. The initial phase of the WebCTRL system will connect eight different buildings over the University's existing Ethernet backbone.

WebCTRL, made by the Automated Logic Corporation of Atlanta, Georgia, is a web-based building automation system that uses a standard web browser as the user interface. This allows University personnel to access the system and to perform all necessary monitoring and control functions from any computer on the network. The BACnet open communication protocol is used throughout. BACnet proved to be the ideal protocol for this project, as it supports high-end functions such as scheduling, alarming, and trending. On this project, control systems made by Honeywell, Siemens, Trane, Automated Logic, and others will be integrated into a single BACnet system. The actual contruction and renovation work will be performed by a number of different contractors, with DVL Automation installing the WebCTRL system throughout.

Located in southern New Jersey, Rowan University first opened its doors to students as the Glassboro Normal School in 1923. Today it covers 200 acres and offers undergraduate through doctorate programs to over 10,000 students. The scope of the educational programs offered at Rowan has also undergone a dramatic increase, and a new $42.2 million Science Building forms the centerpiece of its current construction program. The cutting-edge technology of WebCTRL made it an appropriate choice for this dynamic University, giving it a true state-of-the-art energy management and controls system. When completed, the system will control everything from VAV boxes and fan-coil units in individual rooms to giant chillers and cooling towers supplying multiple buildings. The project is being funded by the State of New Jersey and was awarded to DVL Automation through a competitive bid process.
