Description

Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is an XML-based format for content distribution. This database allows you to create articles and generate an RSS feed.
For instructions, open the Using This Database document (Help > Using This Database).
News aggregators are the most popular tool for interpreting RSS. All you need to do is download a news aggregator and subscribe to an RSS feed. The news aggregator will check the feed for updates and alert you when there is new content.
A popular (open-source) news aggregator is RSSOwl.

Using This Database - Domino Administrator

Quick Start Guide

Create a new database from this template. It should be located on a Domino web server. The template was designed in Lotus Notes 6.5.1 but should work with any 6.0.x or 6.5.x versions.
Open the new database and click on the "RSS Articles" title in the upper-left. Open the "Database Configuration" profile. (See Figure 1).
Compete the "Database Configuration" profile.
Create a full-text index for the new database.
You're now ready to create articles in the database. Click the "New Article" button and complete the form.
You can open the starting web page by clicking the "Open Web Site" button in the database view. This will launch your web browser.

Access Control List - recommended settings

Default access should be Reader.
Maximum Internet name and password should be Reader.
Lotus Notes users should have Editor access with the Role "GlobalReader". This Role allows them to view Draft articles. (If the Role "GlobalReader" does not already exist, then you must add it to the access control list.)
Database managers should be given the Role "DatabaseConfig". This allows them to edit the Database Configuration document as shown in Figure 1. This option will not appear unless the user has the "DatabaseConfig" role. (If the Role "DatabaseConfig" does not already exist, then you must add it to the access control list.)

The RSS feed uses this information when generating the XML document.
You should complete this information before creating any Articles. If the "host name" changes, you will need to edit & re-save all existing articles.

Technical Information - How to edit the Welcome page

The database you created has a "Subform" design element named "WebHeader". You can edit this Subform with Domino Designer 6.5.x.
It includes an "XML" graphic that links to the RSS feed. The graphic is an "Image Resource" inside the database - xml.gif.

The RSS Feed is generated from the "Page" design element named "news.rss".

Lotus Notes client

Content is managed from a Lotus Notes client. Here's an example of the Form.
As with any Lotus Notes database, content creators can replicate the database for use off-line. Administrators could also make this a mail-in database, allowing users to submit content to the database from an email address, and then have it published.
